The words. The pictures. Their voice.
A text export is hard to sit down and read. Chat Keepsake makes it a searchable book: a cover with your chat name and dates, chapters by year and month, pictures beside their messages, and audio controls for included voice notes.
Save the book as a folder or download a ZIP. Extract it and open index.html in a current browser, without an account or internet connection. Keep the whole folder together so the photos and sound stay with the words.
From your phone to a family book
- In WhatsApp, use Export chat. Choose to include media if you want the pictures and voice notes. Save the export to your computer.
- Open Chat Keepsake in Chrome or Edge. Choose the exported ZIP, or the TXT and its media files. Give your book a name and check the date format.
- Make your book, save it, and review the items it could not interpret. For a paper copy, choose Print → Save as PDF in the finished book.

A keepsake you can check
- messages.csv keeps the message text, sender, exported time and attachment paths in a spreadsheet-friendly list.
- UNKNOWN.csv lists missing attachments, skipped lines and date assumptions. Nothing is quietly called recovered.
- iPhone and Android TXT and ordinary ZIP exports are supported. Your source files stay unchanged.
- When day and month could mean either thing, the book states the assumption. You can choose the right order and make it again.
Try an invented family conversation
The finished sample includes a generated picture, a generated audio tone, multiline messages, emoji and missing-media notices. It contains no real people or private messages.
Sample inputs: iPhone export ZIP · Android export ZIP. These are made-up exports generated for testing, not files taken from real accounts.
Know the limits before you buy
This has been tested on invented files in headless Chromium, not yet on real family exports or every computer and locale. Creation requires current Chrome or Edge on a computer. The finished book opens in current browsers; audio playback depends on the browser and file format. Unsupported attachments stay as downloads.
The tool accepts up to 256 MiB of selected and expanded data, 64 MiB per file and 100,000 messages. It does not open phone backups, encrypted ZIPs or ZIP64. It cannot restore messages or media WhatsApp left out, and it does not turn your export back into a WhatsApp chat.
One timestamp layout is detected per file. Other date-like lines stay in the preceding message. Only matching timestamps with a sender or a recognized English notice start another message. Build combined exports separately. Unknown notice languages stay as text; files with no recognized messages are refused. Pasted text identical to a real message header or known notice cannot be distinguished from one. Check the book against your export.
The printed PDF keeps text and photos. Voice notes and videos remain in the folder; paper cannot play them. The folder is not encrypted. Share it only with people you choose.
Is there a free way?
Yes. WhatsApp's own export is free, and you can read its TXT in a text editor. The free, open-source WhatsApp Chat Parser is another option if you want to write your own viewer.
Chat Keepsake saves the work of turning those files into a book: monthly chapters, inline pictures, audio controls, a search box, print layout and an honest review list in one local workflow. A digital PDF service is also an option. This product is for people who want to keep their messages on their own computer and retain playable audio beside the book.
